How are products made from rubber granulate?
The production of products made from rubber granulate is similar to baking waffles. First, a “dough” is prepared using rubber granulate and polyurethane as a binder. For ELT products (recycled rubber granulate from used tyres), either coloured or colourless binders are used, while for coloured EPDM products only a colourless binder is employed. The granulate consists of small, irregularly shaped rubber crumbs of various types (e.g. SBR, NR, EPDM). The sieve curve—which defines the percentage of larger and smaller granules—critically determines the properties of the final product. In addition to the granulate distribution, the pressing pressure and mould design (such as the pattern on the bottom) are essential. To prevent sticking, a release agent is sprayed onto the mould surfaces before filling. The mixture is pressed in the mould at about 80 °C for 10 to 30 minutes and then cures for several days before being packaged and shipped.
