The playground safety tile in the 50 × 50 × 3 cm format with an EPDM wear layer is an impact-absorbing playground surface designed for fall heights of up to 90 cm. It is certified according to EN 1177 and therefore suitable for playgrounds with low fall heights. The convenient tile size and the side-inserted connector pins simplify installation and increase the stability and service life of the surface. Individual tiles can also be replaced if required.

Areas of application

The 3 cm thick safety tile is used wherever children need protection from injuries caused by falls from heights of up to 90 cm. Typical applications include playgrounds for young children, low slides, spring riders, balance elements and other play equipment with limited fall height in kindergartens, schools and on public or private playgrounds. Thanks to the EPDM wear layer, the surface is particularly suitable for areas with frequent skin contact. In addition to outdoor playgrounds, the tile is also suitable for indoor environments such as indoor playgrounds or playrooms. The safety flooring is also used in therapy, rehabilitation and care facilities.

Structure and material

The safety tile has a two-layer construction. The wear layer consists of fully coloured EPDM rubber granules. EPDM is naturally UV-resistant and free from harmful substances. As a result, the surface remains colour-stable and attractive over many years. The underlying functional layer is made from PU-bound ELT rubber granules. ELT stands for “End of Life Tyres” and refers to rubber granules produced from recycled vehicle tyres. This elastic functional layer provides the necessary shock absorption and ensures the safety performance of the safety tile. The combination of a colour-stable EPDM wear layer and a shock-absorbing functional layer combines high visual quality with reliable fall protection.

Underside and drainage

The underside of the safety tile features wide drainage channels. On bound sub-bases, rainwater can therefore be reliably drained following the slope of the surface. When installed on plastic gravel grid systems, rainwater can infiltrate directly into the ground. The surface therefore remains permeable and does not seal the ground.

Connection and installation

The safety tiles are installed in a staggered pattern on a bound sub-base or on plastic gravel grid systems. Two sides of each tile contain holes for plastic connector pins, which connect each tile with two tiles from adjacent rows during installation. This creates a stable tile surface that prevents lateral movement or separation of the tiles. In most cases, the surface is stabilised with edge restraints. If the connector pins are glued during installation, edge restraints may not be required.

Maintenance and use

Safety tiles with an EPDM wear layer are slip-resistant, water-permeable and pleasantly resilient underfoot. The surface remains colour-stable and attractive even after many years of use. The playground surface is maintenance-free and easy to clean. Dirt can be removed by sweeping or by using a pressure washer. Individual tiles can easily be replaced if required.
