The Paddock Mat is made from rubber granules bonded with polyurethane. It is intended for paddocks, stables, loose housing and field shelters. The mats let rainwater pass through and are frost-resistant. They have a slip-resistant surface and give slightly under the hoof.
How do paddock mats help horses?
Horses need a dry place to stand. If they stand on wet ground for long periods, the hoof horn softens. This can lead to thrush and mud fever. In autumn and winter, some paddocks become muddy. Areas in front of the field shelter and around the hay feeder are often particularly muddy. Paddock mats let rainwater pass through. If they are laid on a base that allows the water to drain away, hardly any puddles form. Horses then have a dry surface to stand on even after days of rain. Paddock mats are slip-resistant both when dry and when wet. This helps a horse lie down and get back up in a stable or field shelter.
How are paddock tiles laid?
The base must be load-bearing, level and water-permeable. Gravel grids filled with chippings are well suited. Lay the paddock tiles on top without adhesive in a random bond pattern, so the joints are staggered. The area needs a firm edge restraint on all sides. This prevents the tiles from moving apart.
Do paddock mats need bedding?
Horses do not like urinating on a firm surface because it splashes. They are also reluctant to urinate on paddock mats. For this reason, straw or shavings are used as bedding in stables, loose housing and field shelters, or a separate toilet area is provided. In the paddock, horses need an unsurfaced area where they can urinate.
What are paddock mats made from?
Paddock mats are made from coarse rubber granules from old car tyres. A polyurethane binder holds the granules together. Small gaps remain between the granules. Water drains through these gaps. The rubber mats are frost-resistant. Frost does not damage them even when they are wet. They are not designed to be driven over regularly by a yard loader or tractor.
