The Playground Safety Tile measures 50 × 50 × 7 cm and is tested to BS EN 1177 for a critical fall height of up to 2.05 m. It is made from rubber granules bonded with polyurethane and has a high binder content. This makes the tile abrasion-resistant and dimensionally stable. The surface is slip-resistant, and the elastic tile body cushions the impact of a fall. The tile has bevelled edges. Plastic push-fit connectors are supplied with the tiles. They link neighbouring rows of tiles. The Playground Safety Tile is laid on a bound base or on a load-bearing layer of plastic honeycomb grid filled with chippings.
Which play equipment is the tile suitable for?
The Playground Safety Tile is suitable beneath play equipment with a high free height of fall. Examples include high swings, climbing towers, climbing nets and large multi-play units on public playgrounds and school playgrounds. It is also used beneath climbing walls in playgrounds, beneath high stations in a calisthenics park and in fire service training areas. The tested critical fall height of 2.05 m must be at least as high as the free height of fall of the equipment. This figure can usually be found in the equipment manufacturer’s documentation.
How are the tiles laid?
The Playground Safety Tile is laid in a half-bond pattern. Each row is offset from the next by half a tile, like bricks in a wall. Every tile has holes for the push-fit connectors in two opposing edges. The connectors fit into these holes and join each tile to the two adjacent tiles in the neighbouring row. This stops the rows moving sideways. Edge restraint is needed to stop the tiles moving along the axis of the push-fit connectors. It is not needed where the tiled area is set flush into a lawn or a paved, concrete or asphalt surface. Alternatively, the push-fit connectors can be bonded in place. The tiles are cut with a circular saw or jigsaw.
What base do the tiles need?
The Playground Safety Tile is laid on concrete, asphalt or paving. On natural or made-up ground, a load-bearing layer of plastic honeycomb grid filled with chippings must be installed. The tiles must not be laid on a laying course of chippings. Every base must remain load-bearing over time and be reasonably level. Water passes readily through the tiles. Drainage channels are moulded into the underside of each tile. On concrete or asphalt, water runs beneath the tiles and follows the slope. On the plastic honeycomb grid, it drains into the ground below.
How much upkeep does the play surface need?
A play area surfaced with Playground Safety Tiles needs very little upkeep compared with loose-fill safety surfacing made from sand, gravel or wood. Loose material gets dirty, gradually becomes compacted during play and is carried out of the area. It therefore needs regular cleaning, loosening and topping up. By contrast, Playground Safety Tiles are easy to look after. Sweep away leaves and sand with a broom. Remove stubborn dirt with a pressure washer.
