How do I calculate the number of tiles needed for my area?

The number of tiles required for an irregular area can be calculated manually or determined using the digital laying planner.

For irregular areas, a scaled laying plan on graph paper is recommended. For the manual calculation method, draw the area on graph paper at a scale of 1:100, where 1 cm corresponds to 1 m. Place the tile grid over the drawing and draw the tiles within the area according to their laying dimensions. The drawing shows where offcuts will be required and allows the required number of tiles to be counted.

The online laying planner determines the quantity required more quickly than the manual calculation method. It is available for every product in the online shop. Once the area dimensions have been entered, the tool automatically calculates the number of tiles required and displays a suitable laying pattern. On the product page, simply click ‘Plan installation’. The planner works directly in the browser, is free of charge and does not require registration.

Can I lay WARCO rubber tiles myself?

Most private customers and local authorities lay WARCO rubber tiles themselves. Commercial users also commonly carry out the installation themselves.

Rubber tiles are laid on a suitable sub-base and are neither screwed down nor glued. Depending on the range, the individual tiles are joined by a jigsaw interlock or plastic connectors. Any perimeter cuts are made with a circular saw, a jigsaw or a sharp utility knife with a snap-off blade.

The sub-base can usually be prepared by the customer as well. On concrete, asphalt or an existing firm surface, the rubber tiles are laid directly after any uneven areas have been levelled where necessary. On bare ground, a sub-base is formed first. Gravel grids, such as grass grids or plastic grids with a honeycomb structure, are a well-established choice for this purpose. They significantly reduce the work involved and noticeably improve the quality of the installation.

How do visible jigsaw interlocks, plastic connectors and concealed jigsaw interlocks differ?

Rubber tiles made from polyurethane bound rubber granules can be joined by one of three systems, a visible jigsaw interlock, plastic connectors or a concealed jigsaw interlock. The systems differ in the profile formed at the tile edge, the joint pattern, the laying patterns that can be used and whether the completed area needs perimeter edging.

With a visible jigsaw interlock, the tile edge has interlocking teeth. Depending on the product range, the teeth have a dovetail form or a rounded shape, and they engage with the adjoining tile through the full depth of the tile. The interlocking profile is either formed as the tile is pressed or, after the pressed tiles have rested at the factory for several days, cut from the tile. How prominent the tooth pattern looks depends on the edge profile and on the colour of the tiles. If the same tooth pattern is present on all four sides, the tiles can be laid in any direction. If the sides differ, the edge profiles impose a fixed laying direction. The visible jigsaw interlock provides the most stable connection and holds the tiled area together without perimeter edging or adhesive.

Tiles joined with plastic connectors have straight edges. Cylindrical plastic connectors are inserted into factory drilled holes in the sides of the tiles. Installation proceeds row by row in half bond. In this pattern, every tile is connected to four other tiles, two in the preceding row and two in the following row. Tiles next to one another within the same row remain unconnected. Each connector restricts movement across its own axis, while the tiles remain able to move along that axis. The tiled area therefore needs adhesive or fixed perimeter edging that provides restraint in the direction of the connector axes. Often a suitable boundary already exists, such as a parapet or wall. An adjoining lawn that finishes level with the tiled area can also hold the outer tiles at the side.

With a concealed jigsaw interlock, the tiles engage below the visible part of the edge, within a stepped recess on the underside of each tile. Two sides of the tile carry the projecting profile, while the two opposite sides carry the matching counterpart. This arrangement fixes the laying direction. Viewed from above, the interlock remains concealed and the joints run in straight lines. Rubber tiles with this connection can be laid in stack bond, which forms a chequerboard pattern, or in a 1/3 offset. Because the interlocking profiles sit within the stepped recess, the joint does not extend down to the sub-base, which therefore remains fully covered across the whole tiled area.

Which flooring is suitable for an outdoor fitness area?

Rubber flooring for exercise equipment in an outdoor gym can be made from PU-bound rubber granules. It is slip-resistant, shock-absorbing, weather-resistant and frost-resistant.

For outdoor use, porous, water-permeable gym tiles are used. Rainwater passes through the tiles across their entire area, while the surface provides stable footing when wet.

Thickness and construction depend on the intended types of training. For calisthenics, equipment training and functional training, a balance between stability and shock absorption is required. Tiles of about 3 cm are suitable for many of these applications.

As well as thickness, density and construction affect the properties of rubber flooring. For kettlebells, barbells and other heavy weights, thicker tiles or multilayer surfacing systems are appropriate.

Where impact-absorbing surfacing is required around training equipment, the critical fall height determined in accordance with BS EN 1177 must be at least equal to the required free height of fall.
