The EPDM Playground Safety Tile measures 50 × 50 × 7 cm and is tested to BS EN 1177 for a critical fall height of up to 2.10 m. It has two layers. The wearing layer is about 3.5 mm thick and made from newly manufactured EPDM. This through-coloured material is colourfast, pleasant to the touch and suitable even for prolonged skin contact. The surface is grippy. Beneath it is a shock-absorbing base layer made from end-of-life tyre granules bonded with polyurethane. It cushions the impact of a fall. Plastic push-fit connectors are supplied with the tiles. They connect adjacent rows of tiles. The EPDM Playground Safety Tile is laid on a bound base or on a load-bearing layer of plastic honeycomb grid filled with chippings.

What play equipment is the tile suitable for?

The EPDM Playground Safety Tile is suitable for play equipment with a high free height of fall. Examples include high swings, climbing towers, climbing nets and large multi-play units in public playgrounds and school playgrounds. The tiles are also used beneath climbing walls in playgrounds, beneath high stations in calisthenics parks and in fire service training areas. The tested critical fall height of 2.10 m must be at least as high as the free height of fall of the particular item of equipment. This value is usually given in the equipment manufacturer’s documentation.

How are the tiles laid?

The playground safety tiles are laid in half bond, like bricks in a wall. Each row is offset from the next by half a tile. Every tile has holes for the push-fit connectors in two opposite edges. The connectors fit into these holes and join each tile to the two adjacent tiles in the neighbouring row. This stops the rows moving sideways. An edge restraint is needed to stop the tiles shifting along the line of the push-fit connectors. The edge restraint is not needed if the tiled area sits flush within a lawn or an area of paving, concrete or asphalt. Alternatively, the push-fit connectors can be glued in place. The tiles can be cut with a circular saw or jigsaw.

What base do the tiles need?

The EPDM Playground Safety Tile can be laid on concrete, asphalt or block paving. On natural or made ground, a load-bearing layer of plastic honeycomb grid filled with chippings must first be installed. The tiles must not be laid on a laying course of chippings. Every base must remain stable and reasonably level over time. Water passes readily through the tiles. Drainage channels are moulded into the underside of each tile. On concrete or asphalt, water drains beneath the tiles and follows the slope. On the plastic honeycomb grid, it soaks into the ground below.

How much upkeep does the surface need?

Playground safety tiles need very little upkeep compared with loose-fill safety surfacing made from sand, gravel or wood. Loose material becomes dirty, gradually compacts during play and is carried out of the area. It therefore needs to be cleaned, loosened and topped up regularly. Playground safety tiles, by contrast, are easy to look after. Sweep away leaves and sand with a broom. Remove stubborn dirt with a pressure washer.
