The playground safety tile in the 50 × 50 cm format is an impact-absorbing playground surface made of PU-bound rubber granulate and certified according to EN 1177. The practical tile size and the plastic connector pins inserted from the sides simplify installation and allow individual tiles to be replaced if required.

Areas of application

Playground safety tiles are used wherever children need protection from fall injuries. Typical applications include playground equipment such as slides, seesaws, balance elements, climbing structures and combined play systems in kindergartens, schools and on public or private playgrounds. The safety flooring can also be used in therapy, rehabilitation and care facilities.

Structure and material

The playground safety tile is made of PU-bound ELT rubber granulate. ELT stands for “End of Life Tyres” and refers to rubber granulate produced from recycled vehicle tyres. The particularly durable construction with an increased binder content provides high wear resistance as well as high dimensional stability outdoors. In coloured safety tiles, a pigmented binder is used in the wear layer so that the black rubber granules are colour-coated. The tile also features a bevelled edge that creates a clean and even joint pattern.

Underside and water drainage

The underside features a pronounced drainage structure. On bound bases, rainwater drains away following the slope of the surface. When installed on plastic gravel grid systems, rainwater can infiltrate directly into the ground. The surface therefore remains permeable and is not sealed.

Connection and installation

The tiles are installed in a staggered bond on a bound base layer or on plastic gravel grid systems. Two sides of each tile contain holes for plastic connector pins, allowing each tile to be connected to two tiles in the adjacent rows during installation. This creates a stable tile assembly that prevents lateral movement or drifting of the safety tiles. In most cases a perimeter edging stabilises the surface. If the connector pins are glued during installation, the edging may become unnecessary.

Maintenance and use

Playground safety tiles made of PU-bound rubber granulate are slip-resistant, water-permeable and comfortably resilient underfoot. They are maintenance-free and easy to care for. Dirt can be removed by sweeping or with a pressure washer. Individual tiles can be replaced easily if required.
