The Stable Mat is 3 cm thick and made from rubber granules bonded with polyurethane. It is intended for stables, stable aisles and grooming areas in indoor stable blocks, as well as for outdoor stables and loose housing systems.
What does a horse need underfoot in a stable?
Horses are steppe animals. Their hooves are suited to firm, dry ground. Concrete is firm, but cold and slippery when wet. Shod horses can slip easily because their shoes get little purchase. The mat remains firm under the hoof and cushions each step slightly. Its granular surface is slip-resistant even when wet. This helps the horse when getting up in its stable.
What is the Stable Mat made from?
The Stable Mat is made from ELT granules, meaning rubber granules from recycled tyres. Polyurethane binds the granules. The mat is compacted under high pressure. It is highly abrasion-resistant. New mats initially smell of rubber. This smell soon fades.
How are stable mats laid?
The mats are laid without adhesive in a random bond pattern. The offcut from the last mat in one row becomes the first mat in the next row. This saves material and creates the desired T-joints. The base must be load-bearing and largely level, such as concrete or screed. The area needs edge restraint all round. In a stable, the walls provide this restraint. Cut the mats with a jigsaw or circular saw.
What happens to urine on stable mats?
The mat allows very little urine to pass through. If it is not absorbed, urine remains on the stable mat. If urine continues to accumulate, it seeps beneath the mats. There it breaks down and produces ammonia, which irritates the respiratory tract. This must be prevented. One option is for the horse to urinate outside the stable, but this requires constant access to an open paddock. Alternatively, use enough bedding on the mats to absorb the urine or provide a separately bedded corner for urination.
How much bedding is needed over rubber mats?
A horse only gets the REM sleep it needs for recovery when lying down. Horses mainly lie down on dry, yielding ground. They lie down noticeably less on wet or cold surfaces. The lying area therefore still needs bedding. The mat needs a thinner layer of straw or shavings than bare concrete. When mucking out, remove droppings and wet patches. For a thorough clean, lift individual mats and clean them with a pressure washer.
