EAN: 4251469371705 | Item no.: 7170

A type FP playground safety tile with an EPDM wearing layer cushions the impact if a child falls from a swing, slide or climbing frame. Each tile consists of two layers. The wearing layer is about 3.5 mm thick and made from EPDM granules. Below it is the tile body, made from recycled tyre rubber granules to cushion the fall.

What is the surface made of?

Type FP playground safety tiles have a wearing layer made from newly manufactured EPDM granules coloured throughout. The material is naturally UV-resistant and keeps its colour even with heavy use. The surface provides good grip and feels pleasant to the touch. It is safe even with extended skin contact.

Which thickness suits which play equipment?

Type FP playground safety tiles are available in several thicknesses. The greater the height from which a child could fall, the thicker the tile needs to be. The equipment manufacturer usually states this height in its documentation. It is called the free height of fall. Each tile thickness is tested to BS EN 1177 to determine the height up to which it can still cushion a fall adequately. This is the critical fall height. It must be at least as high as the free height of fall for the play equipment. A thinner tile is therefore sufficient beneath a spring rocker. A thicker tile is needed beneath a climbing tower.

How are the playground safety tiles laid?

Type FP playground safety tiles are laid in a half-bond pattern, like bricks in a wall. Each row is offset from the adjacent row by half a tile width. The supplied plastic push-fit connectors are inserted into holes on two opposite edges. They connect each tile to the two adjacent tiles in the neighbouring row. The area should have a fixed edge restraint to prevent the rows from drifting apart in the direction of the connectors. Where the tiled area is set flush into grass, block paving, concrete or asphalt, an additional edge restraint is not usually needed. The tiles can be cut with a circular saw or jigsaw.

Where can the playground safety tiles be laid?

Type FP playground safety tiles can be laid on firm bases such as concrete, asphalt or block paving. On soil, a load-bearing layer made from a plastic honeycomb grid filled with stone chippings is required. The plastic honeycomb grid stops the stone chippings from gradually moving sideways beneath the tiles. Laying the tiles directly on stone chippings without a plastic honeycomb grid is not recommended. Every base must remain firm and be reasonably level. Rainwater passes through the tiles. On concrete or asphalt, it flows down the slope through drainage channels on the underside of the tiles. On the plastic honeycomb grid, it soaks into the ground.

How much maintenance does the play area need?

Type FP playground safety tiles are easy to maintain. Leaves and sand can be swept up with a broom. Stubborn dirt can be removed with a pressure washer. By contrast, loose-fill safety surfacing made from sand, gravel or wood becomes dirty, compacts during play and is gradually carried out of the play area. It therefore needs regular cleaning, loosening and topping up.
