Frequently asked questions

How is the critical fall height tested according to EN 1177?

To determine the critical fall height according to EN 1177, a frame of at least 1 m² is placed on a rigid, level surface. Loose materials such as sand, gravel or wood chips are filled to the specified thickness without compaction. Safety tiles are laid out so that the joint between tiles can also be tested. A drop test head with an accelerometer is repeatedly dropped from different heights, under defined temperature and humidity conditions. The sensor measures the Head Impact Criterion (HIC). If the HIC value remains below 1000 at all measurement points, the respective fall height is considered achieved.
