Grass or weeds can grow in the joints of rubber granule tiles. This can occur where tiles are laid with plastic connectors, and where a joint extends down to the sub-base.

During installation, bonding the tile edges can close the joints.

With tiles featuring a jigsaw interlock, weeds will generally not grow in the joints when the tiles are used and maintained correctly. The same applies to tiles with a hidden jigsaw interlock.

The joints of a jigsaw interlock are either too narrow for growth or do not extend to the sub-base. To avoid unwanted growth, tiles and joints should always be kept clean.
